The Cost of Hope was a refreshing historical read. I enjoyed Soleil and Alex’s romance. I loved all the twists especially the one surrounding Soleil’s condition when she was found by Alex. The relationship between Soleil and Alex was believable and touching. Alex’s devotion to Soleil and Hope was heartwarming.

This story was well written and flowed well. For me, it was a refreshing spin on an interracial romance during the 1860’s Deep South. As with any good romance there are villains and Vivian and James don’t disappoint. I wanted to get rid of Vivian from her first appearance.

If you’re a fan of historical romances, you’ll love this book.

Alex and Soleil grew up as equals even though they were not of the same race. The Civil War intervened, terror and abduction changed Soleil's life. Alex happened upon her and rescued her. They now face the reality of their forbidden love due to the difference in their races. How all of this was overcome must be read to be believed.
The facts about the this time period in the US are not pretty. Made quite clear in so many details of this story. Knowledge that human trafficking could still affect a World traveler terrifying. The sweet hope of escape and love for anyone in these circumstances... Priceless.
Years ago, I fell in love with historical romance books. This was my introduction to the writings of G S Carr, and she did not disappoint me. It was pure pleasure reading about Alexander stumbling upon and rescuing the love of his life. Even thought Soleil didn't know who he was, his undying love for her was enough for him to protect her and provide for her. All of the obstacles they faced and overcame gives the heart of readers hope. Their love for each other also causes the heart to hope. In the times we live, we need love and hope. Beautifully written story.
I loved this book. True love at its finest. The history of the time was accurate. Soleil is a strong heroine and Alex is strong, loving and protective. Alex gave up his life for the love of Soleil and the health of Hope. Surprise ending, but I'm glad of it. Their friends, Charles and Virginia, are true friends who helped always. I would definitely recommend this book and this author.
I'm 63 yrs old and I can honestly say that I don't look my age! I'm a lighter skinned black person and I say all this because I can honestly say I have not experience much racism. But in the last 2 years in America what I hear and see on the news is not so different from this book! Today I heard the outgoing Governor of Ma stating that minority's needed to have their heads cut off because execution was too humane! 2019 ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! So to read about a time when there was so much hatred due to sooooo much ignorance but you were able to handle it with love and respect it gives me HOPE!! That this too shall past!!
This was beautiful reading. My problem is at the end the author want you to give your email to obtain information on the characters that should have been added to the story. The love scene of the character was limited. The background story was limited etc. The book should be 5 stars but i give 3.
Sarah, a former slave had lost her memory due to an abusive slave owner, James. In 1860's after the Civil War the slaves were free, James attacked Sarah again. She gathered her daughter up and ran as fast as she could, running into a crowd of people.

Alex looked up to find Soleil right in Alexander Cummings arms (Soleil was Sarah's name before becoming James' slave) Alex and Soleil had grown up together and was young when they fell in love with each other. Now Alex lives in Elba, Alabama and owns the largest plantation in Alabama. He takes Soleil home; Alex and Soliel are together once again to rekindle their love.

In 1860's it was illegal to have an inter-racial marriage, her being a former slave and him being a socialite plantation owner. This book kept my interest from beginning to the end. There are a few bad true scenes and some secrets with many twists and turns throughout. This is an outstanding historical novel. Don't miss out.

The characters were well developed with good personalities. The plot kept me turning the pages and the daughter, Hope was adorable. Ms Carr, thank you for sharing your story with us. This is a must read to the end.
